Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world. In Nigeria, it remains a leading cause of cervical cancer, a disease that claims the lives of thousands of women every year. The good news? HPV is preventable, and one of the most effective ways to prevent it is through the HPV vaccine.
What is HPV?
HPV is a group of viruses with more than 200 serotypes. Some are categorised into low-risk types, causing genital warts, while others, called high-risk HPV, are responsible for cancers such as:
- Cervical cancer
- Anal cancer
- Vaginal & vulvar cancer
- Some throat and penile cancers
HPV is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact, and most sexually active people will be infected at some point, even if they have only one partner.
The HPV vaccine helps the immune system build protection before exposure to the virus. This significantly reduces the chances of developing HPV-related diseases and cancers later in life.
Key benefits of the HPV vaccine
- Prevents up to 90% of cervical cancer cases
- Offers long-lasting protection
- Safe, with minimal side effects
- Protects against other HPV-related cancers like throat, anal, penile/vulvar cancers, and genital warts
Who Should Get the Vaccine?
The best time to get vaccinated is before becoming sexually active, when the immune response is strongest. However, the vaccine is recommended for men and women between 9–45 years.
- You’ll receive the HPV vaccine in a series of doses. The number of doses you need depends on the age at which you start:
- Ages 9–15: Two doses are enough for full protection. The second dose is given 6 to 12 months after the first because the immune system responds very strongly at this age.
- Ages 15–45: Three doses are recommended for complete protection. After the first dose, the second is given 1 month later, and the third 5 months after the first dose.
Is the HPV Vaccine Safe?
Yes. The vaccine has been used globally for more than 15 years, with strong evidence of safety and effectiveness. Common side effects are mild and temporary, such as soreness at the injection site or low-grade fever.
The HPV vaccine is available across all Marie Stopes medical centres in Nigeria. Whether you’re a parent protecting your child, or a woman or man taking charge of your reproductive health, now is the best time to get vaccinated.
